Volunteer Spotlight

Lesley Paisawa has made volunteer work a big part of her life for a long time. Lou (as she is affectionately known at Family Connections Hackham) lived and worked in Papua New Guinea for 17 years where she began her family and also worked for the Minister of Transport and a prominent Lawyer. Whilst living in PNG she was a vocal advocate for women’s rights and equality, working for women suffering from Domestic Violence, advocating for women to be able to walk around freely and also attending many political rallies. She still speaks a little Tok-Pisin (German dialect pidgin English)!

When her family returned to Australia she completed a TAFE course to increase her skills so that she could return to the work force here. She worked at the Working Women’s Centre for 19 years as their office manager. Whilst working full time she also coached her daughter’s netball team and also volunteered behind the scenes for her dancing school.

After resigning from Working Women’s Centre she began volunteering at a local RSL and at Family Connections Hackham (formally known as Pathways). Lesley did this because she was never a “stay at home” person.  She loves people and talking face to face with others and she wanted to give something back to the community. She has been with us ever since and is a very valuable and valued member of staff. Lou is always willing to take on new responsibilities and her knowledge and skills are respected and treasured.  Her latest achievement is to develop and publish a 129 page book called “Cooking at the Junction”, that is now available for sale. The book is not just a recipe book, it has a great deal of information that is intended to help young people who are just starting out on their own. The sale of this book will raise much needed funds for Family Connections Hackham and also raise our profile in the local area.
